Abstract : The number of intermarriages in South Korea has been on the rise since the early 1990s, especially marriages between Korean men and women from other Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Philippines. This development was made possible by the South Korean State’s efforts to promote intermarriages. By exploring different government networks, the State first promotes marriage match making and passes laws to facilitate immigration through marriage and the creation of agencies specialized in intermarriage. The State has also increased its efforts to promote programmes favouring multicultural families by establishing "Multicultural Family Supports Centres". This paper aims to study how the South Korean government promotes an intermarriage that most often results in the practice of "arranged marriage" (chungmae kyŏrhon), and thereby, aims to reflect on the social logic of this practice in comparison to the "marriage of love" (yŏnae kyŏrhon) –increasingly practiced with the liberalization and privatization of South Korean social mores.
