Body of women, body of the City. For a spatial analysis of the Historia Naturalis of Pliny the Elder

Résumé
The Natural History of Pliny the Elder is an attempt to put in a nutshell all of what was known of the world in the first century. Concerning the history of women and bodies, only his pharmacology and the aspect of the « uterus-women » have been studied. The analysis of how women’s bodies interact, both favourably and unfavourably, within the city itself, reveals many cultural, sociological and economical elements, ranging from the scale of the house to the scale the world. The feminine body may be a threat to the City (menstruation, exceptional
pregnancies), despite the nuances coming with women aging. Pliny, moralist for whom the Urbs represents the center of the universe, blames female’s impudicitia and luxuria that came from outside Rome, for having corrupted Rome. Finally, it is possible to discuss genders, bodies and spaces dichotomy, often implied by Pliny.
L’Histoire Naturelle de Pline l’Ancien veut rassembler l’ensemble du savoir du Ier siècle. S’agissant de l’histoire des femmes et des corps, seuls sa pharmacologie et le thème de la « femme-utérus » ont été étudiés. L’analyse des interactions entre corps féminins et espaces de la Ville, énoncées ou dénoncées par cette vaste encyclopédie, révèle de multiples composantes culturelles, sociologiques et économiques, à différentes échelles, de la maison au monde. Le corps féminin peut menacer la ville (règles, grossesses exceptionnelles), malgré les nuances apportées par l’âge. Pline, moraliste pour qui l’Urbs est le centre de l’univers, blâme l’impudicitia et la luxuria féminines, qui ruinent Rome en y important l’ailleurs. Il est enfin permis de relativiser la dichotomie des genres, corps ou espaces souvent postulée chez Pline.
