This paper is an attempt to characterize the vowel systems of the dialects of British English. We carried out a (semi-) automatic dial ect identification procedure using [hVd] words. Our second aim was to examine to what extent the procedure allowed the description of vowel systems. The method yields approximately 90% correct identification, and we show that it is not sensitive to gender differences, and may therefore be used for the description of vowel systems.
