Personne et modalité, modes d’accès à l’autre

Abstract : This paper analyses the role of person in two types of modalisation – the conjectural future by which the speaker indicates his / her commitment to the truth-value of his / her utterance, and the conditional by which the absence of speaker’s commitment is signalled. The future and the conditional are then contrasted with their equivalents in English, among which epistemic will. While the conjectural future eliminates otherness, the conditional introduces it whatever the person involved. In English, modalisation is related to whether the utterance is attestable or not from the speaker’s point of view. As such, modalisation depends on the person involved and the hearer is regarded as a potential subjective origo in cases where s/he is not in French.
