Les propriétés aspectuelles des noms d'activités

Abstract : This paper examines the properties of nouns that are morphologically related to activity verbs (N-Vact). Our aim is to determine whether the aspectual properties of these nouns are akin to those of the corresponding verbs. After having dismissed deverbal nouns whose denotation is concrete, we show that two classes of abstract N-Vact can be differentiated: mass nouns (which describe genuine activity situation types, e.g. jardinage) and count nouns (which can denote events, e.g. manifestation). The latter are similar to accomplishment nominals (e.g. accouchement) but diverge from them in that they describe homogeneous situation types -- in this respect nouns such as manifestation are aspectually faithful to their linking verb. Finally, we suggest that the aspectual gap between the two types of N-Vact reveals the 'default' tendency for some activity verbs to describe habitual situations whereas others rather describe occurrences.
