Dépôts rituels mayas et séquences architecturales dans l'Acropole Nord de Tikal aux périodes préclassique et classique

Abstract : The extensive excavations performed in the Maya area unearthed a whole collection of ritual deposits associated with the structures. This connection between offerings and architecture was highlighted by their intentional placement within platforms and buildings. The excavations of Tikal’s North Acropolis revealed many architectural developments and ritual deposits from the Middle Preclassic (800 BC.) until the Terminal classic (950 AD.). The succession of offerings in space as well as in time can therefore be read as a sequence. A review of the excavations carried out between 1958 and 1966 by the Tikal Project under the direction of W. Coe, made it possible to establish a corpus of 298 ritual deposits and 125 traces of fire. After a superimposition of the architectural and depositional sequences, the offerings are first characterized according to their stratigraphic position (construction, occupation, abandonment). Grouped into “offertory assemblages”, they are in a second time analysed on spatial, typological and statistical criteria. The other categories of deposits, fires and burials, are then observed and compared with the architectural history. Finally, deposits are questioned on a more emic basis, in search of clues concerning the meaning that the Maya gave them. Eventually, some types of recurrent offerings and ritual fires were certainly part of successive ceremonies devoted to buildings, during the inauguration and occupation of a space or for an apotropaic purpose. Others probably had their own agentivity, perhaps as a medium to the underworld, or to carry different petitions to non-human entities.
