Embarcations de tradition indigène en Patagonie du Nord / Sud Chili : typologie, technologie et routes de navigation de la Cordillère des Andes à la mer

Abstract : This research is a contribution to the understanding of the navigation technologies and practices of indigenous origin in the north Patagonia lakes district, aiming to contribute in the knowledge of the history of mobility, the use of space and its transformation by the communities from prehispanic times up to the middle of XXth century. The working hypothesis is based on the idea that indigenous navigation tradition had played a central role in the connections set between the different populations livig on the rivers and lakes of northern Patagonia of the oriental and occidental slopes of the Andes mountains, and also in the development of routes of contact, mobility and exchange between this communities and those from the Pacific ocean shore. The study of the indigenous boats and their navigation it’s not easy, specially from archaeology. This mainly due to the preservation problems that haven’t allowed to find direct ancient evidences of their usage. Is for this reason that we propose the study of prehispanic boats and navigation from three diffrent but complementary sources (the archaeological record, the ethnohistorical record and the ethnographic record) that will allow us to arrive to more pertinent and developed conclusions.
